Tagging is the new way of organizing online material. Not only can you sort posts by category, but modern blogging softwares like WordPress let you tag your posts with different keywords. What’s great is that tagging can help you improve traffic!
Tags can help by helping optimize for search engines. Since these are keywords, search engines can better determine the relevance and importance of these words for your posts. More importantly, tagging makes it easy for social bookmarkers and blog search engines to crawl your site.
One of these important social bookmarkers and blog search engines is Technorati. Technorati is perhaps the biggest blog search engine, as it has millions of posts tagged every day. Other places where you can use tags are del.icio.us, Flickr (for photos), Digg, Reddit, and StumbleUpon, among others. There are plenty of other social bookmarking sites where you can sign up your blog for, but these are the ones that can substantially contribute to your traffic.
