The Domain Name Game
March 8th, 2008 by Frank
While most bloggers are content with running their sites on free, hosted services, those who are serious with using blogs as a medium for communication opt to run their sites on dedicated domains. This is because in the worldwide web today, your domain is your brand. The domain name is therefore important. It’s what users type into their browsers, after all.
When signing up for a domain name, remember that it should be memorable enough, and should be easy to dictate. .COM domains are the most preferable, while .NET would be the next. country-specific domains are good too, especially if you are blogging about something geographically contextual.
The shorter the better, although most short word domains are most likely to be taken already. Remember, domaining is big business and people earn thousands (if not millions) from selling premium domain names.
Perhaps you can settle for yourname.com. That’s probably not yet taken, unless you share your name with dozens of other people.
